Each month at Own Your Bold, we feature a different creative business owner who exudes the #boldboss vibe: confident, encouraging, authentic, courageous, and wholeheartedly passionate about positively influencing women.
I’m super excited to introduce you to Katie Chamel, one of my forever blog friends whom I got to meet in person a couple months ago while in New Orleans! We originally connected years ago when I was a fashion blogger and she, a beauty blogger. Our passions have evolved over time and intertwined in fun ways!
Katie is absolutely gorgeous inside and out, on-camera and off! Please enjoy her beautiful spirit today.
Name: Katie Chamel
Biz: Rusé Beauty Bar
Title: CEO, Head Consultant
1. Please start by telling us a little bit about yourself and your small business!
I’m just a girl who recognized my passion for helping women feel more confident through the use of skincare and cosmetics at a young age. I’m a licensed esthetician, specializing in the art of eyebrow shaping. My biggest fault is that I’m never content. I always have a thirst to do and know more, which is what led me to co-opening Rusé Beauty Bar with my friend, Amber! Rusé means ‘foxy’ in French and it’s very fitting and fun for the tone we wanted to set when you walked into our studio! We offer a range of services from microblading eyebrows to Oxygen Infusion treatments and more! Working with women from all walks of life, looking to achieve one common goal on a daily basis, is my dream come true!
2. Can you tell us what your favorite things are about your part of the world, and what we can expect if we visit you someday?
I love the culture in New Orleans. I love driving down the street and seeing the old mixed in with the new, bright colored houses, lights and beads strung all year round. There’s so much free art to take in and admire in every corner of the city. Free jazz on Frenchman, street performances at Jackson Square, art galleries in the Marigny. All of the food is amazing! It really doesn’t matter where you go or what you pick, it’s going to be damn good. I don’t think anyone here takes things -too- seriously, how can you in the Big Easy?! It’s a great place to be!
3. Do you have any tips for your fellow bosses? What are your fave cameras, supplies and equipment to use for your projects?
Create professional relationships with your clients! I always remember the last conversation we had, so the next time they come in we can chat about that wedding they attended or their graduation! This is what will keep someone coming back to you!
I’m lucky enough to say I’m engaged to a photographer and I’ve had him come to the studio a few times for photos. But otherwise, I use my iPhone 6S+ and it takes beautiful photos! When we opened the business, I invested in a newer, larger phone because I knew how many photos I was going to be taking of my work and it’s great to edit on a larger screen!
4. What are your other hobbies and passions outside of entrepreneurship?
I feel like my world revolves around esthetics but every now and again, I love learning a simple song on guitar. I find recluse in music, singing, reading, and meditating. It wasn’t until I was in a car wreck last year that I started meditating and when I did, I totally understood why it’s such a big part of peoples lives. It helps me feel more balanced, aware, and calm – which is a huge benefit when you run your own show!
5. What are your future plans in business and in life?
I plan to continue to grow as an esthetician, taking 1-2 new training courses a year every year, and building up a strong clientele that believes and trusts our business name! I mentioned earlier that I am engaged, so planning a wedding is in the near future which is pretty exciting to think about!
6. What’s your favorite thing about social media and the internet? What’s your biggest challenge?
My favorite aspect about social media currently is how easy it is for people to find you! Through friends liking your posts, recommendation posts, and tags. I get a really great feeling when I ask people how they found us and they say Facebook or Instagram! My biggest struggle is definitely remembering to make regular posts! It’s such an easy thing to do, but always falls to the wayside….don’t be like me!
7. What’s your personal philosophy or belief system?
Elizabeth Taylor once said that her “personal philosophy of beauty is to always believe something wonderful is about to happen.” and I believe in that whole-heartedly. It’s hard to stay negative when you truly believe great things are in the works.
8. What do you love most about be
It’s awesome to be alongside other small business owners with similar ambitions and goals! I love being a part of a community where we can build each other up and celebrate another persons successes rather than tearing them down!
9. What’s the most important lesson you’ve ever learned in life?
I’ve learned that life is too short to sweat the small stuff! As someone who is naturally a little tense and always overthinking situations, I’ve had to learn how to shut all of that off and remind myself that everything is temporary – especially in this life! However, keeping that thought in mind also helps me stay on track of my goals and keep my vision for life very clear!
10. What song do we all need to listen to… right now!?
I’m a huge fan of Majestic Casual playlists on Youtube and Spotify! I always have one of their mixes playing based on what mood I’m in and clients are always asking what I’m playing because they want to know for themselves!
